The Gopher men's hockey team scored three goals in the first period en route to a 4-2 win over Notre Dame Sunday afternoon at Mariucci Arena, reports.

The Gophers also defeated Notre Dame on Friday night, 5-0, and the two-game sweep extends their unbeaten streak at home to 17 games.

The No. 1-ranked Gophers (7-1-0 overall, 0-0-0-0 Big Ten) got on the board just 29 seconds into the game on a goal by Sam Warning – his third of the season.

The Gophers tallied two more goals in the first – both of them on power plays – by Hudson Fasching and Mike Reilly. Taylor Cammarata had assists on all three goals, according to

Robbie Russo scored for Notre Dame in the second period to make it 3-1. Minnesota came back about a minute later when Michael Brodzinski scored his first goal of the season. The Irish got one more score in the second period to make it 4-2, but could get no closer.

The Gophers opened the door for Notre Dame's scoring in the second period due to penalties, the Star Tribune notes. They spent 10 minutes in the penalty box and gave up a power play goal.

The Gophers went 2-for-4 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill. Goalie Adam Wilcox had 21 saves for Minnesota.

The Friday/Sunday series featured a little family rivalry as well: Gopher head coach Don Lucia's son, Mario, plays for the Irish. But Mario Lucia was shut out in both games, according to the Star Tribune.

Notre Dame, ranked 15th, drops to 5-4-1 overall on the season; the Irish are 1-0-1 in the Hockey East conference.

Minnesota plays a home-and-home series next weekend against the University of Minnesota Duluth.
