Gopher wrestler wins NCAA heavyweight title
University of Minnesota heavyweight wrestler Tony Nelson defeated Northwestern's Michael McMullan 6-2 in the 285-pound final at the NCAA wrestling championships in Des Moines, Ia.
The Pioneer Press reports it was the second consecutive title for the Gopher junior from Cambridge, Minn. Since the 2000 season, Minnesota has won the heavyweight class five times -- Nelson (2012, 2013), Cole Konrad (2006, 2007) and Brock Lesnar (2000). Nelson has said that one of his goals was to be the first three-time winner for Minnesota. Penn State wrapped up its third straight NCAA title. Minnesota finished third, with seven other Gophers finishing in the top eight.
