Gophers' Cobb says team believes they are the Big Ten's best

The Minnesota Gopher football team is off to a terrific 6-1 start. They are 3-0 in the conference and leading the Big Ten's West Division to this point.

It's Minnesota's best start to a season since 2008.

One of the reasons for that strong start has been the performance of running back David Cobb, who leads the country with 189 carries. He's also fourth in total yards with 1,013.

Last week, Cobb was added to a watch list for the Maxwell Trophy, which goes to college football's most outstanding player.

"Coach trusts me to keep giving me the ball and I just keep producing," said Cobb to the Big Ten Network. "The carries are piling up, but my body still feels fresh, the trainers do a great job working with me Monday through Friday."

Cobb doesn't take much of the credit himself, though.

He says the team has been successful because everyone buys in to what they are doing.

"The biggest reason we are 6-and-1 right now is because we all believe, we all have confidence and we all are playing with a certain chip on our shoulder," said Cobb. "Guys buy in, we have a great staff, we have a great support staff and we feel like we are the best team in the conference."

Minnesota is expected to be a heavy favorite at Illinois on Saturday, but the Gophers will get a chance to prove it during the final weeks of the season. Their schedule includes home games against Iowa and Ohio State before they finish the season on the road at Nebraska and Wisconsin.
