University of Minnesota running back David Cobb suffered a setback at the NFL scouting combine on Saturday when he suffered an apparent injury while running in his first 40-yard dash of the day, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

The Pioneer Press notes it was apparently a quadriceps injury. Cobb ran the 40 in a relatively slow 4.81 seconds and didn't run it for a second time. He also missed all of the on-field drills at the combine, which is being held in Indianapolis.

The first two days of the combine were filled with off-field activities including medical exams and interviews with various teams. So Cobb didn't get a chance to show off his physical skills.

“I feel badly for him. He's a good kid,” NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock told the Pioneer Press. “I’m sure he’ll be able to run in his pro day, so it won’t hurt him.”

Cobb will compete in Minnesota’s pro day on March 2, assuming he's healthy.

Cobb ran for 1,626 yards and 13 touchdowns last season and was one of three Gophers invited to participate in the combine. The other two are tight end Maxx Williams and linebacker Damien Wilson.

Cobb is part of a deep group of running backs in this year’s draft that includes Wisconsin standout Melvin Gordon, Georgia’s Todd Gurley, Ameer Abdullah of Nebraska, Jay Ajayi of Boise State, Duke Johnson of Miami and Tevin Coleman of Indiana.

At 5-foot-11 and 229 pounds, Cobb is a physical runner who can run both inside and outside of the tackles. He also catches the ball well. He’s been projected as a third round pick in the NFL Draft which takes place in April 30-May 2.
