Gophers derail Boilermakers, pick up first Big Ten win

After falling in the final seconds to Michigan in their conference opener last week, Minnesota bounced back with an 82-79 victory over Purdue at Williams Arena Sunday.

It looked as if the Gophers would coast to a comfortable win against the Boilermakers, up 67-51 with less than 10 minutes to go in the second-half.

But Purdue stormed back via a 28-15 run, and got a chance to tie the game on their last possession, as Minnesota did against Michigan, but saw a three-pointer that would've sent the game to overtime go begging.

Dre and Austin Hollins, who were a combined 4-of-19 from the field against the Wolverines, led Minnesota with 35 combined points Sunday, while Deandre Mathieu and Malik Smith also reached double figures.

Minnesota shot 53 percent from the field while holding the Boilermakers, who drop to 0-2 in the Big Ten, to just 39 percent from the floor.

The Gophers return to action Wednesday at Penn State, a 6 p.m. tipoff.
