Gophers had a 98.2 percent chance to make the NCAA hockey tourney

Basically, the impossible happened.

At 5 p.m. Saturday, the Gophers men's hockey team was sitting pretty with just a 1.8 percent chance of missing out on the NCAA Tournament.

Everything had to go wrong in order to knock them out. Everything happened.

  • Michigan Tech won the WCHA tournament.
  • Boston University won the Hockey East tournament.
  • Princeton won the ECAC tournament.
  • Air Force won the Atlantic tournament.
  • Denver won the NCHC tournament.
  • Notre Dame won the Big Ten tournament.

Had just one of those not happened, Minnesota would've been in the field of 16 as one of the four No. 4 seeds. Instead, their 98.2 percent chance of making it was flushed down the drain, and now head coach Don Lucia's future with Minnesota is deeper in doubt than ever before.

What's more is that Minnesota-Duluth gets the final at-large bid, edging the Gophers by an insanely slim .0001 points in the RPI.

According to the Duluth News Tribune, the Gophers and UMD would've clinched bids if Boston University and Princeton had lost.
