Gophers' Jamal Mashburn Jr. enters the NCAA transfer portal

He's the second player to enter the transfer portal in the past week.

Two days after head coach Richard Pitino was fired by the Gophers, four-star recruit Jamal Mashburn Jr. has entered the transfer portal with plans to leave the University of Minnesota.

ESPN was the first to report Mashburn's name showing up in the transfer portal, though it has since been confirmed by numerous others, including Mashburn's father, Jamal Mashburn Sr., who told the Star Tribune that his son is reopening his recruitment.

Mashburn, a 4-star recruit, was the highest-rated recruit in the Gophers' Class of 2020. He averaged 8.2 points per game as a freshman, including while starting the final eight games of the season.

Last week, former Orono High star Jarvis Omersa entered the transfer portal, leaving whoever coaches the 2021-22 Gophers with two vacant spots on the roster.
