Gophers' Nelson will play, emerges as primary quarterback

As far as quarterback shuffling goes, everybody got nothin' on the 2013 Minnesota Vikings, but the Gophers have been using a two-QB strategy this season.

That appears to be fading away as Philip Nelson seems to be claiming the starting role from Mitch Leidner, despite having a hip pointer. And Nelson will likely get the start against Penn State at TCF Bank Stadium Saturday.

"He's moving around," coach Jerry Kill said at his Tuesday press conference, according to the Pioneer Press, "and we anticipate he'll be ready to go."

The Gophers remain proud of their two-quarterback system, notes the Star Tribune, and coach Jerry Kill is quick to say, “We need them both.” But Nelson has handled most of the time as the Gophers have reeled off three consecutive victories over Northwestern, Nebraska and Indiana.

Nelson was co-offensive player of the week for the Big Ten after throwing for 298 yards and four touchdowns against Indiana.

“Philip is playing at a really high level,” Kill said.
