Gophers, St. Cloud State hold top two spots in men's college hockey rankings

The first college men's hockey poll of 2014 is out, and the Gophers, despite not making the championship game of the Mariucci Classic this past weekend, remain atop the rankings with St. Cloud State regaining the No. 2 spot.

The Gophers lost in a shootout to Colgate Friday, though the game will officially go down as a 2-2 tie, with the shootout only acting as a way to determine who would make the championship game of the four-team tournament and who would be playing in the consolation matchup.

Minnesota, with Don Lucia, Hudson Fasching, and Brady Skjei returning to the team from the World Juniors in Sweden, would bounce back by defeating RPI Saturday 6-2.

St. Cloud State played an exhibition against the U.S. under-18 national team this weekend, winning 8-0, and hopped back to No. 2 in the poll thanks to the previous holder of the spot, Ferris State, getting dropped by Colgate in the championship game of the U of M's weekend tournament.

Minnesota State sits just outside the rankings, trailing No. 20 New Hampshire by a narrow margin for the final spot in the poll, and will have a chance to burst into the top-20 in Anchorage this weekend against UAA.

The Gophers get back to Big Ten play against Penn State this weekend, while SCSU is back to the ice against the University of Denver Friday and Saturday in NCHC action.
