Gophers star guard Marcus Carr enters NCAA transfer portal
The next head coach of the Minnesota Gophers men's basketball team will essentially be starting from scratch with news that All-Big Ten point guard Marcus Carr is planning to transfer.
Carr, who led the Gophers with 19.4 points per game while adding 4 rebounds and 4.9 assists per contest, has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to ESPN's Jeff Borzello.
Carr is the third Gopher from the 2020-21 roster to enter the portal, joining freshman guard Jamal Mashburn Jr. and senior forward Jarvis Omersa.
As Borzello writes, Carr "immediately becomes the most sought-after available transfer" in the country.
Whoever is hired to replace Richard Pitino – who is now the head coach at New Mexico – will be taking over a massively depleted roster that is now without its best player (Carr), top 2020 recruit (Mashburn) and Omersa.
Minnesota is due to get 7-footer Liam Robbins back next season. Gabe Kalscheur, Both Gach and Tre Williams will also undoubtedly be key players on the 2021-22 roster.
