Gophers stomp Georgia to reach college softball's sweet 16

It's the second trip to the Super Regional round in program history.
Publish date:

For just the second time in program history, the Gopher softball team has advanced out of the NCAA regionals and into the Super Regional round.

The Gophers crushed Georgia in a 8-1 win Monday afternoon at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium to win the Minneapolis Regional.

Minnesota shutout North Dakota State 1-0 Friday night, rallied to beat Georgia with a walk-off homer in eight innings on Saturday, and cruised to the victory Monday after Sunday's game was rained out.

The only other team to reach the Super Regional in Gopher history was the 2014 squad that hosted the Minneapolis Regional and then was swept in by Oregon. The Gophers were the No. 16 national seed in 2014 and Oregon was No. 1 overall.

This time around, Minnesota is the No. 7 national seed and will face No. 10 LSU in a best-of-three series at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. The winner of the series will advance to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.

LSU went 3-1 to win the Baton Rouge Regional and has reached the Super Regional round for a fifth year in a row.

The full schedule for the Gophers and LSU has yet to be announced.
