Gophers sweep inaugural series with Penn State

The Gophers scored early and often Monday, defeating Penn State 5-2 in the second game of their Sunday-Monday series.

Sunday, Minnesota got three goals from defensemen in a 3-2 win, but Monday it was a bit more conventional for the Gophers, as forward Travis Boyd gave Minnesota the lead just over two minutes into the series finale.

After Boyd got Minnesota in front, junior forward and leading scorer Sam Warning got the Gophers their next without a Penn State answer, putting the game out of reach.

The Nittany Lions would net two third-period goals. But between the two, Minnesota added one of its own, this one from senior captain Nate Condon.

The Gophers got an empty-netter from Justin Kloos as the Nittany Lions attempted a last-ditch comeback.

The nation's No. 1 team is now 15-2-3 on the season after the sweep over Penn State, the inaugural series between the two squads. Minnesota hosts the Hockey City Classic this Friday against Ohio State at TCF Bank Stadium.
