Gophers want No. 1 pass defense in Big Ten

Gophers' safety Brock Vereen is a good player with good bloodlines. His older brother, Shane, is a running back for the New England Patriots.

Brock may or may not play in the NFL someday, but for now he's one of the leaders in the Gophers' secondary. And Vereen isn't holding back when setting goals for the upcoming season.

"To be the best secondary in the Big Ten is our goal," Vereen told FOX Sports North. "This year, we 100 percent truly feel that that's possible."

That seems like a bold claim considering the Gophers haven't had a lot of success in recent years, but it's not. The Gophers finished fourth in the conference against the pass last season, allowing under 190-yards per game.

"If you're going to play back there and you don't have any confidence, you're in trouble," head coach Jerry Kill said of Vereen. "You better have a lot of confidence, but he's got a lot of reason to be confident because he's a good player, good person, great athlete, great bloodline, great family. You name it, he's got it."
