Alex Gordon crushed a two-run home run off of Twins closer Glen Perkins in the bottom of the ninth to spoil a shutout and lift the Royals to a 2-1 victory over the Twins on Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium.

Alcides Escobar led off the bottom of the ninth with a base hit and Gordon followed with his 16th home run of the season.

Gordon's homer spoiled the strongest outing of the season for Twins' starter Ricky Nolasco. He pitched seven shutout innings and held the Royals to three hits while striking out six.

Jared Burton pitched a perfect eighth before Perkins (3-1) gave up the home run in the ninth for his fifth blown save of the year.

Royals' reliever Wade Davis (7-2) picked up the win, after Kansas City starter Danny Duffy gave up one run in 6 2/3 innings to the Twins.

The game was scoreless into the seventh inning when Brian Dozier led it off with a double, and Joe Mauer immediately followed with a single that brought Dozier around to score.

It was the Twins' only run of the game as the team was 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

The Twins and Royals continue the series on Wednesday. Phil Hughes (14-8) heads to the mound against former Twins pitcher Liam Hendriks, who will make his Royals debut.

According to the Pioneer Press, Hendriks has bounced around to four other organizations (Orioles, Cubs, Blue Jays and Royals) since the Twins designated him for assignment in early December.

In 143 1/3 combined innings at Triple A between Omaha and Buffalo Hendriks is 12-2 with a 2.45 earned run average.
