The Governor's Pheasant Hunting Opener will be held in Madelia this weekend.

The event which begins on Friday with several activities leading up to a banquet will continue on Saturday with a pancake breakfast and the hunt.

It has been a busy week in Madelia leading up to the celebration. The city calls itself the "Pheasant Capital of Minnesota," and it just has completed its fifth annual Pheasant Fest(ival).

Madelia city manager Dan Madsen says there are 8,600 acres of public hunting land within 20 miles of Madelia.

The federal government shutdown though is having an impact. According to a report in the Mankato Free Press, this week, approximately 13 percent, or about 1,100 acres will not be available to hunting, in the Madelia area. Similarly Minnesota pheasant and waterfowl hunters will feel the biggest impact of the shutdown, the state will have 481,000 acres in national wildlife refuge and wetland management districts closed to the public.

The closure of land though shouldn't have a significant impact on the governor's event. According to the report, DNR Southern Regional information officer Scott Roemhildt said there should be enough public land left to accommodate the hunters.

The first Governor's Pheasant Opener was held in Montevideo two years ago, and last year's event was in Marshall.

The Star Tribune reports, that Dayton will be at many of the events, but he will not be hunting in this year's event. He tore a hip muscle in June and his press secretary says Dayton is still recovering from that.
