Women's winner sets course record at Grandma's Marathon

Ethiopian Bazu Worku and Kenyan Sarah Kiptoo won the men's and women's titles in this year's Grandma's Marathon in Duluth.

Kiptoo beat the women's course record by four minutes. She crossed the finish line with a time of 2:26:32, breaking the 10-year-old course record for women by 33 seconds.

Worku was also eyeing a Grandma's record in his first race on the north shore. Dick Beardsley has held the record since 1981. Worku arrived in Duluth with a personal best nearly four minutes better than Beardsley's mark. But Worku told the Duluth News Tribune through an interpreter that he was bothered by the cold and wind.

20 runners were bunched together at the 18-mile mark. But then Worku made his move, breaking away from the lead pack, reports the News Tribune. He finished in a time of 2:11:12.

Race officials say 5,613 runners completed the marathon.
