Green ballpark? St. Paul's will have rainwater in the toilets, solar scoreboard

St. Paul's new ballpark won't be finished by St. Patrick's Day, but planners say it will be among the greenest of baseball stadiums when it does open in May.

A video released Friday shows off a system that will collect rainwater from the roof of a neighboring Metro Transit building and funnel it into the ballpark.

A giant rain barrel – actually a 27,000-gallon tank – will help supply the sprinkler system and the toilets.

The Pioneer Press reports the rainwater system is projected to offset about 10 percent of the total flushes at CHS Field.

Meanwhile, an array of 300 solar panels at the northeast corner of the ballpark will be among the largest in any American stadium and will generate about 12 percent of CHS Field's electricity, the Pioneer Press says.

The countdown to opening day at the new home of the St. Paul Saints has now clicked under three months. The $63 million ballpark in Lowertown – a historic district at the eastern edge of downtown – was funded with money from the state, city, and baseball team.

Here's a preview of what the ballpark will look like when finished.
