Hamline University has suspended its coach indefinitely and 14 players have been disciplined following an alleged New Year's Eve incident that resulted in a former player being charged with assault, the Star Tribune reports.

The alleged altercation happened in Spokane, Wash., where a 20-year-old woman accused Eugene Lawrence of punching her in the face and breaking her eye socket and jaw.

Lawrence was charged and released to the custody of his parents after posting bail. He has been dismissed from the basketball program and university as he awaits a formal hearing.

The coach, Nelson Whitmore, has been suspended indefinitely. The players faced disciplinary actions because student handbook rules and Hamline's athletic code of conduct were violated, the university said.

The St. Cloud Times attempted to reach Whitmore for comment and messages left after hours were not returned. He is in his sixth year of coaching the Hamline basketball team.

Hamline said that Saturday's scheduled game against Gustavus Adolphus has been forfeited, the Times reported.
