Some of late coach Herb Brooks's "Miracle on Ice" memorabilia will be auctioned off this weekend in New York, coinciding with the 35th anniversary of Team USA's historic 1980 victory over Russia.

According to the Associated Press, nearly 40 lots of Brooks's mementos will be auctioned off this weekend. The items run the gamut, from the ring he received for winning the gold medal, to the whistle he used during practice, to notes he wrote about the team.

"Between me and my sister and my mom, having to store this stuff and track it down and babysit it was just kind of a pain, quite frankly," said son Dan Brooks to the AP. "We decided this might be a good time to see if anyone has an interest in the stuff to just simplify our lives."

There is a live auction in New York on Saturday night, and online bidding has already begun for some of the items.

The AP notes that Heritage Auctions – the group hosting the event – estimates the value of the collection to be worth $200,000. The ring alone is estimated to be worth $50,000.

The gold medal itself isn't for sale, but according to CBS Sports, other items include:

  • Some of Brooks's jerseys from his playing days
  • His warmups from the 2002 U.S. Olympic Team
  • Awards from his days as an NHL head coach
  • His championship ring from the University of Minnesota

Proceeds from the auction will go to help pay for college for Brooks's now-teenage grandchildren and to the Herb Brooks Foundation, which was created in 2003 to increase youth opportunities in hockey.
