The 2019 State Girls Hockey Tournament begins at Xcel Energy Center this week with the Class A quarterfinal games on Wednesday and Class AA beginning Thursday.
Check out the full brackets here. Below are all of the first-round matchups and a nugget or two about each team.
Class A - Wednesday
#2 Breck vs. Fergus Falls - 11 a.m.
Breck is among the favorites to win it as they've played a mostly 2A schedule and proved highly capable of competing with the best in the state, including beating the No. 1 seed in the AA tournament, Edina. Fergus Falls is no slouch, either. The Otters are 21-6 and have hung with some of the state's best, including South St. Paul, Brainerd, Forest Lake and Mound Westonka.
#3 Mound Westonka vs. Mankato East/Loyola - 1 p.m.
Undefeated Westonka (22-0-5) is led by goalie of the year finalist Taylor Smith, who has been a rock in net during a ton of close games. Smith could have a lot of face time with Mankato star Madison Davis, who has 32 goals this season including a pair of four-goal games.
#1 Warroad vs. St. Paul United - 6 p.m.
At 26-0-1, Warroad is the top team in Class A and boasts the state's leading scorer, Hannah Corneliusen (42 goals, 30 assists), Ms. Hockey finalist Kaitlyn Kotlowski and a goalie of the year candidate, Quinn Kuntz. St. Paul United is 12-13-2, but they're in the tourney after upsetting South St. Paul in the section final.
#4 Proctor/Hermantown vs. #5 Rochester Lourdes/Dover-Eyota - 8 p.m.
Proctor/Hermantown faced two Class A tourney teams during the regular season, losing to Breck and skating to a tie with Mound Westonka. Lourdes might come in with a boost in confidence after playing Warroad in a close, 2-1 loss, on Jan. 26.
Class AA - Thursday
#2 Andover vs. Farmington - 11 a.m.
Andover is in the tourney after their stunning rally to beat Forest Lake in the section final. Farmington is in the tournament thanks to four straight wins, including an overtime section final victory over Lakeville North.
#3 Brainerd vs. White Bear Lake - 1 p.m.
White Bear Lake is back in the tournament for the first time since 2002 thanks to a 2-0 win over Hill-Murray in which Calla Frank stopped 50 shots. The goalie of the year candidate is tremendous and will need to be again against a Brainerd team that scores nearly five goals per game.
#1 Edina vs. East Ridge - 6 p.m.
The Hornets are aiming for a three-peat and have the firepower to get it done, led by Ms. Hockey finalist CC Bowlby. The Dartmouth commit has 26 goals and 27 assists this season. East Ridge is making its state tourney debut after shutting out top seed Eagan in its section final.
#4 Maple Grove vs. #5 Minnetonka - 8 p.m.
This is a rematch of an early season game that Maple Grove won 3-2 in overtime. Maple Grove enters the game having won eight of its last nine while Minnetonka lost eight of its last 11 regular season games before sweeping three straight in the section tournament.
Note: Consolation games will be played at TRIA Rink in St. Paul.
