Here's why making fun of Sergio Dipp is wrong

Internet trolls let Dipp have it after an awkward live shot on Monday Night Football.

You may have seen ESPN Deportes reporter Sergio Dipp on the sidelines during the Chargers-Broncos game on Monday Night Football.

With less than five minutes left in the first quarter, Dipp gave a report that could be interpreted as awkward.

He was trying to make a point about Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph, arguing Joseph's diversity and background helped him become an NFL head coach.

Here's video, along with one of the snarky tweets:

And that wasn't the only internet troll who let Dipp have it.

Despite the criticism, Dipp handled the whole thing like a pro and even took to Twitter on Tuesday morning to explain the connection he was trying to make.

He meant no disrespect at all, he said, and was just trying to point out the significance of a minority head coach in the NFL.

Because ESPN's "A-team" was in Minneapolis covering the Saints-Vikings game, ESPN was forced to use people who fans haven't seen much of before.

Bob Ley of ESPN's Outside the Lines was quick to defend his colleague. Ley dealt with a similar situation when he was reporting on the World Cup in Honduras a few years ago.

Dipp was born in Mexico, and generally does work in Spanish for ESPN Deportes. And making fun of a reporter who's out of his comfort zone on national TV is a probably the wrong avenue to take.

As someone who has worked in radio and has committed embarrassing mistakes, it's important to give people second chances.

This wasn't a complete fail like the Boom Goes the Dynamite guy, this is a credible reporter who was asked to do something he wasn't used to.

Lighten up, people.
