Hockey goalie Maddie Rooney is showing the boys how it's done

She joined the boys hockey team to better prepare herself for the college game, and now Maddie Rooney is receiving national attention after a string of stunning performances.

The Andover High School senior joined the Huskies boys team this fall so she could get used to the faster speed of the game ahead of her move to University of Minnesota-Duluth next year, according to the Star Tribune.

But the goalie is certainly not there to make up the numbers, with her performance in last Saturday's game against Duluth East catching the eye of ESPN, who said her "masterful" display in saving 41 out of 43 shots was the difference as her team drew 2-2.

Coach Mark Manney told MN Girls' Hockey Hub: "A bond was developed in that game. The kids really trust her to bail them out."

She had played with boys team before at bantams level, but joined the girls team as a sophomore and last year helped her team to state while assistant captain, the Tribune notes.

Manney had said could not guarantee her playing time when she tried out, despite calling her "clearly one of our top two goalies", but she has since started two out of three matches for the Huskies.

In the other game, ESPN notes, she came in with her team trailing 3-0 and didn't concede as Andover came back to win 5-3.
