Homers, King Felix too much for Twins to overcome

Felix Hernandez out pitched Phil Hughes as the Seattle Mariners beat the Twins 2-0 Friday night at Safeco Field.

The Mariners took the lead in the second inning off a solo blast from Nelson Cruz. With Hernandez on the mound the Mariners didn't figure to need a lot more than that.

The score stayed 1-0 all the way until the fifth inning, when Logan Morrison connected for his second homer of the season – another solo shot to give Seattle the 2-0 lead.

Hernandez did the rest, he went the distance without giving up a run and held the Twins to five hits, while striking out nine.

It was Hughes' best start of the season to this point, he went all eight innings holding the Mariners to two runs on six hits, while striking out nine.

It was just the two mistakes that came back to haunt him and the Twins as they resulted in home runs for Cruz and Morrison.

Trevor Plouffe was the only Twins player with more than one hit, he finished 2-for-3 on the evening. Oswaldo Arcia, Kurt Suzuki and Jordan Schaeffer had the only other Twins' hits.

The Twins send Trevor May (1-1) to the mound on Saturday against Seattle lefty James Patton.
