Hopkins standout Nia Coffey taken No. 5 in WNBA Draft

She's the older sister of Gopher men's basketball star Amir Coffey.

Hopkins native Nia Coffey was taken No. 5 overall by the San Antonio Stars on Thursday at the WNBA Draft.

Coffey played college basketball at Northwestern University, where she was the school's all-time leader in rebounds (1,183) and free throws made (496).

The Minnesotan was just fifth player in the history of the Big Ten to finish her career with 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She's is also the older sister of Gopher men's basketball standout Amir Coffey.

After graduating from Hopkins High School in 2013, she left as the schools second all-time leading scorer.

The Stars finished with the worst record last year and had two top-five picks in this year's draft.

Meanwhile the Minnesota Lynx selected Alexis Jones with the 12th overall pick. Jones wrapped up her collegiate career at Baylor where she averaged 13 points per game.
