B) Nov. 6, 1860: According to the Minnesota Historial Society, a horse race in Freeborn County determined the county seat. Albert Lea's Old Tom outpaced Itasca's Fly (a ringer from Iowa) for the honor. Afterwards, Itasca dwindled, and basically becamea ghost town.
