Hughes, Twins no match for Yankees this time

The New York Yankees beat the Twins 7-4 at Target Field, Thursday night.

The loss sent the Twins to their eighth defeat in their last 10 games.

Former Yankee, Phil Hughes was on the mound for the Twins. After shutting the Yankees down during their first meeting in Yankee Stadium earlier this year, the Bronx Bombers got their revenge.

Things didn't start that way for Hughes though. He shut the Yankees out through the first four innings, but New York got to him in the fifth.

With Minnesota leading 2-0, Carlos Beltran belted a three-run home run to give the Yankees the lead. Later that inning, in just his second Major League at bat, Zelous Wheeler sent his first major league hit, into the Yankees bullpen for a home run, to put the Yankees up 4-2.

They added to it from there.

Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka (12-3) picked up the victory for the Yankees.

But the Twins were able to do some damage to Tanaka. For the first time this season, he did not earn a quality start and Minnesota put up a season-high four runs and nine hits against him.

One of those nine hits was an RBI double from Chris Parmelee, extending his career-best hitting streak to 13 games. Brian Dozier had a pair of hits and scored a run.

Sam Fuld was 2-for-3 with a run scored as well.

The Twins and Yankees will play an afternoon game at Target Field on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:10.

Prior to the game, the Twins will honor Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter. He is making his final appearance at Target Field this weekend.
