Is Hockeyville, USA in MN? Metro hockey group a finalist in national contest

It's only natural that a national contest seeking to award the title of “Hockeyville, USA” would find an excellent candidate in hockey-mad Minnesota.

The St. Michael-Albertville youth hockey association is one of the final four groups remaining in the contest sponsored by Kraft Foods. They’re facing other youth associations based in Illinois, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

WCCO reports the association's single rink provides ice time for more than 500 STMA hockey players. Making it to the finals has earned the group enough votes to pay for $20,000 in arena upgrades.

If St. Michael-Albertville emerges victorious in the contest, the association would take the top prize of $150,000 and would also earn the opportunity to host an NHL pre-season game in the fall.

The group is promoting the contest through a Vote STMA web page and their Facebook page which encourages people to repost a page urging votes for the association. People can also vote at Kraft Hockeyville.

“We’re ecstatic to have a position in the last four communities,” Josh Opiola, president of the St. Michael-Albertville Youth Hockey Association told North Wright County Today. “All of our volunteers have worked diligently to support and grow the game we love, and this is a prime example of that passion for hockey in our community.”
