It's deadline day for MN group to show soccer stadium progress

Major League Soccer officials are meeting in Minnesota Wednesday and the result could make or break Minnesota's bid to land an MLS franchise, the Star Tribune reports.

Minnesota was awarded a team three months ago, but a sticking point since has been a lack of legislative support to fund a soccer-only stadium in downtown Minneapolis.

The Star Tribune says the group of investors trying to build the stadium and bring the first MLS franchise to Minnesota, including Minnesota United FC owner Bill McGuire, Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor and Twins owner Jim Pohlad, will ask MLS officials for an extension on their July 1 deadline to show progress in stadium efforts.

In mid-June, an MLS official said the league wouldn't budge its July 1 deadline.

Building a soccer-only stadium in Minneapolis was a key reason MLS Commissioner Don Garber awarded Minnesota a franchise.

"They have an upcoming deadline to hopefully finalize something with their stadium," Garber said, according to Fox Sports. "I'm not going to comment on it until that deadline has passed. I have a lot of respect for Bill McGuire and his partners. We love the market. We want to see something happen there. But we'll wait and see. We really want to have a team in Minnesota, but they have to play in a downtown stadium because that's the deal we cut."

The original proposal to MLS included a stadium between the Farmer's Market and Target Field.

According to the Pioneer Press, McGuire is on record saying it would be "very difficult" to build a stadium without a tax deal supported by the Legislature.
