It's official: Miguel Sano called up by Twins for tonight's game in KC

It's official: The Minnesota Twins called up top prospect Miguel Sano from AA Chattanooga Thursday.

Sano, a 22-year-old native of the Dominican Republic, is hitting .274 with 15 home runs, 48 RBI and 38 walks this season with the Lookouts. He's been playing third base in AA, but there's speculation he'll line up at designated hitter for the Twins.

He'll be in the lineup for Thursday night's Twins game in Kansas City, the start of a four-game series.

Sano is the second of the Twins’ two top prospects to make it to the majors. (Outfielder Byron Buxton was called up in June.) He missed all of last season after having Tommy John surgery and, after a slow start, has come on strong. He hit .329 with six home runs and 17 RBI in June.

Sano, after his call-up, tweeted:

The Star Tribune says the Twins could use his offensive power since they’ve been struggling of late at the plate. They went 11-17 in June and hit just .240 at the plate while scoring 3.7 runs per game.

Sano will wear No. 22.

In a corresponding move, the Twins (as expected) sent struggling first baseman/DH Kennys Vargas down to AA.
