Jared Allen's time in Minnesota was meaningful enough that he agreed to end his career as a Viking by signing a one-day contract with the team, the Vikings announced Wednesday.

"Jared was not only a phenomenal player on the field, but he was also a favorite among the fans and within the organization," Vikings owner Zygi Wilf said in a statement." He will always be a member of the Minnesota Vikings family."

In six seasons with the Vikings (2008-2013), Allen started 96 games and recorded a league high 85.5 sacks. His 136 career sacks rank ninth in NFL history.

Allen played for the Bears in 2014 and the first part of 2015 before being traded to the Carolina Panthers, who lost in the Super Bowl to Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.

Allen's official retirement announcement came in January when he filmed himself riding off into the sunset – on a cloudy day – on the back of a horse.
