Jessie Aney falls in semifinals of Class 2A boys state tennis tournament

The first girl to qualify as an individual for the Class 2A Boys State Tennis Tournament – Rochester Century's Jessie Aney – was beaten in the semifinals Thursday afternoon.

Aney fell to Forest Lake's Toby Boyer 6-2, 6-0 at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota's campus.

But before she lost in the semifinals, the senior, who is bound for North Carolina next fall, won in the quarterfinals. She defeated Como Park's Nathan Parsons 7-6, 6-3.

Aney, who won the Class 2A Girls State Championship in 2011, then teamed with her sister to win the doubles title in 2012, wasn't planning to play high school tennis anymore. She was planning to prepare her game for college tennis.

However, MNTennisHub says she changed her mind for the opportunity to play on the same team as her brother and help Rochester Century end Rochester Mayo's 13-year run as the section 1 champions – a goal she achieved.

"She's not doing it for herself," said Tom Aney, Jessie's father. "She's primarily doing it for the team. For her, it's just another challenge."

Those sports challenges and successes are nothing new for Aney. In 2010, she was named the Sports Illustrated for Kids Sports Kid of the Year.
