Teachers selected from each of the 30 Major League Baseball markets will get the All-Star treatment in connection with Tuesday's big game, including an audience with Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden.

The Star Tribune reports Jill Biden, a former college instructor with a strong record of supporting education, will meet with “All-Star Teachers” on Tuesday. She plans to join the honored educators in the All-Star Game Red Carpet Parade down Nicollet Mall. They'll then attend the actual All-Star Game together in a suite at Target Field.

WCCO had a profile of Minnesota's honoree. Neil Johnson, 61, a retired calculus teacher from Shakopee, is a lifelong Twins fan. Johnson has the longest tenure of any high school softball coach in Minnesota and created both the Shakopee Softball Association and Girls Softball Association. He was also closely involved with building a softball complex in Shakopee and assembling community groups to build fields, press boxes dugouts and bleachers.

Johnson admits that when he was chosen as the All-Star Teacher to represent the Twins, he reacted like a giddy teenager.

“As my kids would text, O-M-G,” he said. “It’s pretty awesome.”

The honored teachers have already taken part in numerous game-related festivities. Johnson told the station that one of his favorite moments was meeting Cal Ripken Jr. on Sunday night.

“We had a teacher recognition banquet and Cal Ripken (Jr.) comes in, so I had my picture taken with him and got an autographed baseball," he said. "Teachers just normally don’t get to do things like this.”

Johnson and the other All-Star teachers will be introduced live on national television before the game.
