John DeFilippo's main objective is making the Vikings extremely explosive

The Eagles had 20 plays of 10+ yards in the Super Bowl, and DeFilippo knows how to work that magic.

Hate to jog your memory like this, but remember how explosive the Philadelphia Eagles were against the Vikings in the NFC Championship Game?

Well, the Eagles won 38-7 and their offense shredded Minnesota's No. 1-ranked defense with a whopping 14 plays of 10+ yards, including three deep balls of 40+ yards.

Turns out it might end up being a good thing for the Vikings.

Because Philly's former quarterbacks coach, John DeFilippo, wants to bring that same kind of explosiveness to Minnesota as the new offensive coordinator.

His primary objective?

"Creating explosive pass gains and explosive run games," DeFilippo told's Mike Wobschall. "And how do you do that? You do that by putting your best playmakers in space and in positions to make plays."

That means a lot of pre-snap movements to set up as many mismatches as possible, he said.

That's the kind of offense that was again on display in Philly's 41-33 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl LII. They racked up an astonishing 20 plays of 10+ yards.

With the Vikings, he inherits an offense that was statistically more explosive in the passing game and nearly as dynamic in the running game as the Eagles in 2017.

20+ yard running plays in 2017:

  • Vikings: 15 (tied 4th)
  • Eagles: 19 (1st)

20+ yard passing plays in 2017:

  • Vikings: 53 (tied 13th)
  • Eagles: 43 (19th)

Minnesota and Philly each had 9 passing plays of 40+ yards while the Eagles had 3 running plays go 40+ compared to 2 for the Vikings.

DeFilippo also inherits a running game that will get Dalvin Cook back from a torn ACL, and DeFilippo loved him coming out of the draft.

“Personally, I loved Dalvin Cook coming out of that draft, I loved him. I knew he was a very special player,” DeFilippo said during his debut press conference with the Vikings

Bottom line: there are still plenty of questions, but even more reasons to be excited about Minnesota's offense in 2018.
