Kevin Love opens up about his own mental health

He hopes that by speaking about his struggles, others will be comfortable doing the same.

Very little was said about Kevin Love's sudden exit from a game last November, but it turns out that he was taken to the hospital after suffering a panic attack.

Love, opening up about his personal life in an article for The Players' Tribune, said he's done "suffering silently" in regards to mental health.

"If you’re suffering silently like I was, then you know how it can feel like nobody really gets it. Partly, I want to do it for me, but mostly, I want to do it because people don’t talk about mental health enough. And men and boys are probably the farthest behind."

The former Timberwolf returned to the court for the Cavs two days later and scored 32 points in a win over the Bucks, but he wrote that he was more relieved that the people around him, including his teammates, thought his trip to the hospital was related to an illness, not a panic attack.

Why hide it? "I didn't want to look weak," he wrote.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in America, affecting 40 million adults age 18+, but only 36.9 percent of those affected get help.

Love began seeing a therapist and says he's learned that as "terrifying and awkward" as it can be, he's learned that talking about personal issues helps him "better understand them and make them more manageable."

A big reason Love spoke about his personal mental health is because Toronto Raptors All-Star DeMar DeRozan, just last week, admitted that he struggles with depression

By speaking out, Love is using his platform as an NBA player to shine a light on the issue of too many men and boys thinking they have to be tough and keep their problems to themselves.

Simply, Love wants to help create a "better environment for talking about mental health."

"So if you’re reading this and you’re having a hard time, no matter how big or small it seems to you, I want to remind you that you’re not weird or different for sharing what you’re going through," Love said.

Love played six seasons in Minnesota before being traded to the Cavaliers for Andrew Wiggins.
