KoMets first wrestle elevator, then takedown title

Kasson-Mantorville made history Thursday night after clinching their first-ever state wrestling championship at the Xcel Energy Center, but getting there was half the battle.

The Minnesota State High School League's John Millea says before the KoMets defeated five-time defending champ Simley 30-27 in the Class 2A team title match, several wrestlers got stuck in the elevator at their downtown St. Paul hotel.

"The last thing I said to them before they got into that elevator, because they're kids, is not to be jumping up and down with that many guys in there," Kasson-Manotorville co-head coach Jamie Heidt told the Post-Bulletin. "Sure enough..."

On the sixth floor of the DoubleTree, 14 wrestlers spent an hour and 15 minutes in the stalled elevator before a teammate came to the rescue.

According to the blog, Sam Stoll, a 285-pound junior, wrestled the door open by prying it apart with his bare hands "and his belly."

The wrestlers were freed with little time to spare. The match was scheduled for 7 p.m. and the teammates were freed around 6:35 p.m.

They went on to take the title. KSTP has some highlights.
