LA Galaxy blast TCF Bank Stadium as the 'worst field' in the league

The Minnesota United FC are 12 games into their first MLS season. Since they don't have their own stadium yet, the team plays its home games at TCF Bank Stadium in Dinky Town.

Last Sunday, the United fell to the LA Galaxy 2-1 but Los Angeles had multiple players suffer injuries, the worst being midfielder Baggio Husidic who broke his leg and had to be stretchered off.

Following the game, Jelle Van Damme – who reported pain in his knee – called it the worst field in the league.

"Honestly, with all respect, this is the worst field I ever played on in this league," Van Damme told "It can only cause you injuries. I think soccer needs to be played on grass."

Galaxy head coach Curt Onalfo agreed with his player's statement saying, "he's pretty upset about it."

TCF Bank uses artificial turf as the stadium is mostly used for the Gopher football team. The site is one of four stadiums in the 22-team league that uses artificial turf.

Other than Vancouver – which uses a Polytan surface – every other team uses grass.

Last December, the United broke ground on a stadium in St. Paul which was expected to be open in 2018.

However the timeline to begin construction on the stadium hit a roadblock earlier this year as the 20,000-seat proposed stadium needed two acres of the north side of the site where a Rainbow Foods currently sits.

In March, the St. Paul Port authority agreed to enter a joint-venture agreement with a Milwaukee-based developer in hopes of clearing the way for a stadium. The Pioneer Press notes the United hope to play games in the new stadium by early 2019.
