A mistake late in her run of the women's super-G likely cost American ski hero Lindsey Vonn a chance at a medal Friday night in PyeongChang.

Vonn, in one of the final turns of her Alpine event, slid off the track before quickly recovering, but not in time to earn a medal in her first Olympic event since the Vancouver games of 2010.

Here's what it looked like

The New York Times perfectly explains what happened:

"During that last stretch Vonn lost her balance as the course turned sharply left. Her right ski slipped from under her center of gravity and her left hip was inches from the snow. Vonn recovered and finished, but precious fractions of a second were lost."

At 33 years old, Vonn still has two chances to become the oldest female American skier to win a medal in an olympic Alpine event.

She races in the Downhill on Tuesday and in the Combined next Thursday and Friday.
