A leading high school softball player has died after a rollover crash near Mankato Thursday.

Alexis Kretsch, 16, of Waconia, was eastbound on Highway 169 in South Bend Township when she swerved her Chevy Blazer to avoid a Grand Prix that had crossed over the road, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Her Chevy left the road and rolled, and she was airlifted to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, KEYC reports.

On Friday, The Minnesota Vortex Elite Softball organization announced on its website that Kretsch died from her injuries.

"This is a tragic, and devastating, loss of life that is difficult to comprehend," it said. "She was a valued member of our organization and she will be missed by her coaches, teammates and our entire organization."

"The entire extended Minnesota softball community has experienced the loss of not only a teammate but most importantly a friend today."

The organization said that Kretsch, known as "Lexi," was an "outstanding pitcher" on the Minnesota Vortex 16U '99 Elite Softball team.

She was also a member of the Waconia High School Varsity team, the Wildcats, with many of her fellow players paying tribute to their beloved teammate on social media, along with other members of the softball community.

Waconia High School football coach Sam Baker also paid his respects on Twitter, saying: "Lexi Kretsch was an incredible person and it's sad to see someone so young gone so soon. Please keep Lexi and her family in your thoughts."
