Former Duluth Marshall and Duluth Central boys hockey coach Brendan Flaherty died at age 57 following a three-year battle with throat cancer.

Flaherty coached high school hockey for a total of 24 seasons beginning with a two-year stint at Duluth Central in 1995.

After leading the Trojans to the state tournament in 1996, he went on to coach 22 seasons at Duluth Marshall where he led the Hilltoppers to seven state tournament appearances and three straight Class A runner-up finishes between 2006 and 2008.

Flaherty was diagnosed in 2018 and complications from his cancer treatment led to a brain infection that impacted his short-term memory. Flaherty resigned as coach of the Hilltoppers after the 2018-19 season to focus on battling his illness.

“Coach Brendan Flaherty passed away peacefully and surrounded by family last night, after a battle with cancer,” Former Orono boys hockey coach, Kasey Yoder said in a statement. “He took great pride in his family and the players he coached over many years and he will be missed dearly.”
