Lindsey Vonn hurt in World Cup, still has sights set on Sochi

BBC Sport reports that Olympic champion skier Lindsey Vonn is down for the World Cup, but not necessarily out for the Olympics. Her unstable right knee gave out halfway down the course at Val d'Isere, France, Saturday.

She had surgery last February after a crash at the world championships. She partially re-tore a ligament in November. She said she would rest after Saturday's accident, and keep her sights on Sochi.

"I didn't hurt myself more than I'm already hurt," Vonn said. "It was a small compression, and it was fully loaded on the right ski and my knee just completely gave out. I tried to pressure the ski again and it gave out again. I had no chance of making that gate, unfortunately."

The 29-year-old Twin Cities native told the Associated Press  she wouldn't race again until sometime in January, and then only a few times.

"I'm going to play it safe and race minimal races, so I can get the confidence and the timing and the feeling of racing again. I'm really going to be safe and smart as I can."

Her boyfriend Tiger Woods watched her clutch her knee in pain from the bottom of the slope. When he left the viewing area to meet her, the paparazzi followed.

"He's very supportive and it's very fun to have him. This is his first World Cup and I think he enjoyed it," Vonn said. "I think he was a little bit more nervous because of my knee. He's worried about me, but he's happy to be here and I'm happy to have him."
