St. Paul native Lindsey Vonn crashed but was unhurt in the season opener of the World Cup giant slalom Saturday in Soelden, Austria, the Pioneer Press reported.

Vonn, a gold medal in the downhill in the 2010 Winter Olympics and four-time overall World Cup champion, crashed out on her second run.

Tina Maze of Slovenia, who was runner-up to Vonn in the overall standings last season, finished first.

Vonn earlier this month said she wants to race against men and is seeking permission to compete in the men's downhill race Nov. 24 in Lake Louise, Alberta.
