Lindsey Vonn falters in final Olympic event, vows she'll break the World Cup record

Vonn led after the downhill but the slalom proved to be too much.

Lindsey Vonn gave herself hope in the first half of the women's Super Combined Alpine event on Thursday at the Olympics, but she didn't have quite enough juice to finish on the podium.

Vonn blasted through the downhill course with a field-leading run of 1:39.37, taking a nearly three-quarter second lead into the final leg of the race – and her toughest event – the slalom.

"I’m a pretty good competitor,” Vonn told NBC between the downhill and slalom. "I’m going to give it hell, and maybe I can pull out a miracle.”

According to the New York Times, Vonn doesn't love the slalom and had gone through just three training runs in the event since Thanksgiving.

It showed as Vonn went off the slalom course as the final competitor, thus eliminating her from medal contention and sealing fellow American Mikaela Shiffrin's spot in second for the silver.

Vonn's Olympic career is now over, and she'll leave PyeongChang, South Korea with just one medal: a bronze in the downhill that she claimed on the way to becoming the oldest (33) American skier to medal in an Olympic event.

What's next for Vonn? She vowed to continue skiing until she breaks the record for most World Cup wins.

“I am hoping that is just one season. I am not going to quit until I get that record, that is for sure, no matter how much pain I am in,” Vonn said, via Reuters.

Vonn's 81 career World Cup wins are six shy of Ingemar Stenmark's record.

“But I really hope it only takes one more season because it would be difficult for me to continue on after that,” she added.
