Lindsey Vonn returns to skiing with giant slalom in Aspen

St. Paul native returned to skiing after recently battling an intestinal illness by participating in the World Cup giant slalom Saturday in Aspen, Colo., the Pioneer Press reported.

Vonn, who was hospitalized with severe intestinal pain earlier this month, finished the first run of the giant slalom in 10th place, trailing Tina Maze of Slovenia by 1.95 seconds as the competition headed into the second run.

The 2010 Olympic gold medal-winner and four-time overall World Cup champion will skip the second round of the giant slalom Sunday to conserve energy, reported The Associated Press.

Vonn had her heart set on competing against men at the World Cup races in Canada Saturday, but the International Ski Federation denied her request.

The skier's hopes to race men might not have been completely dashed, however. USA Today reported that Alpine Canada is in talks with Vonn's sponsor, Red Bull, to organize a race.
