American champion skier and Minnesota native Lindsey Vonn suffered another tough break on Thursday.

The Olympic gold medalist crashed during a training run and fractured her ankle.

According to the New York Times, Vonn crashed on Coronet Peak, in New Zealand. The injury has forced her to fly back to the United States for treatment.

The report notes Vonn's injury may heal before the racing season. She had been training in New Zealand with her United States Ski Team teammates since July 28.

Injuries have been a problem for Vonn recently. Sports Illustrated recalls that she missed the 2014 Sochi Olympics after tearing two ligaments in her right knee during a crash at the 2013 World Championships.

She won Olympic gold in the downhill and took a bronze in the super-G during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. She also captured gold in the downhill and super-G in the 2009 World Championships.

Vonn has said that she plans to compete in the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.

In her career, Vonn has 33 downhill victories, 24 wins in the super-G. She also has three giant slalom victories, two slaloms and five alpine skiing combined races in her career.

">On her Twitter account Vonn said it was a minor setback. Ski team officials told the Times they wouldn't have any further updates on Vonn's condition until she returned home and was examined by doctors.
