Local businesses volunteer to clean up debris on Little League field
A trio of local businesses gathered in Brooklyn Center to help clean up the piles junk that had a Little League facing thousands of dollars in work and fines.
Work started Sunday morning at Thurs Field, Brooklyn Center Little League said, with volunteer employees from both Barton Sand and Gravel and Bituminous Roadways, Inc. rolling in at 7 a.m. to haul the concrete, pipes, old tires, televisions, couches, dirt and other debris away.
Both companies gave free use of equipment and pitched in their help, with Barton also taking the materials away for free.
And to feed all those mouths, Scoreboard Pizza donated lunch to the volunteers.

So how did all those pieces of large, heavy garbage end up on a Little League field? Someone has been illegally dumping it there, with the debris pile doubling in size in the past few weeks.
Deb Stoddard, the league’s president, estimated it would have cost the league up to $18,000 to clean up the mess, Twelve TV reported – plus a $1,000 environmental hazard fine from the Department of Natural Resources if it wasn't cleaned up by Monday.
And that deadline appears to have been met.
On Facebook, Brooklyn Center Little League posted photos of what had been a junk-filled field. Now, it's a wide open patch of dirt.

The league hopes it won't happen again. WCCO reports Little League officials are getting better security systems at the park to deter further illegal dumping.
