Less than two weeks after Augsburg College celebrated Edor Nelson's 100th birthday, the school's Hall of Fame baseball and football coach died Wednesday.

The college's president, Dr. Paul Pribbenow, said in a statement announcing Nelson's death "Few people in Augsburg's history could claim as long and lasting an impact on this college as Edor Nelson."

The birthday tribute this month honored Nelson's four decades at the Minneapolis college and marked the debut of a new video scoreboard at Edor Nelson Field, where the Auggies play football.

On his birthday FOX 9's profile recapped Nelson's service in World War II, during which he escaped from a prisoner of war camp. Nelson told the station that a positive attitude is the most important thing in life.

FOX noted Wednesday that Augsburg will announce funeral plans for Nelson once they are arranged. His wife of 70 years, Dorathy Nelson, died in 2011 at age 95. He is survived by two sons, Bob and Bruce.

The Star Tribune reports that in addition to coaching baseball and/or football at Augsburg for 33 years, Nelson also helped form the school's wrestling program and revived its hockey team.

For Nelson's birthday Augsburg put together a video tribute featuring some of the many athletes who played for him over the years.
