Minnesota's highest individual award in boys high school basketball might be moving on from the "Mr. Basketball" award.

The Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association (MBCA) appears to be distancing itself from the owner of the Mr. Basketball award, Ken Lien, after Lien tweeted an anti-Muslim message. Despite apologizing for his "run their asses otta [sic] here" tweet, Lien does not appear to be in good standing with the basketball community in Minnesota.

Khalid El-amin, a Muslim who won the Mr. Basketball award in 1997, is one of many who have called for Lien to step away from the award.

But that might not be necessary. The MBCA announced Monday the creation of a new award to honor the best basketball player. The "McDonald Award" is named after the all-time winningest coach in Minnesota basketball history, Chisholm's Bob McDonald.

The MBCA's goal is to replace Mr. Basketball with the McDonald Award: "In moving forward, it is the goal of the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association that the McDonald Award will be widely received as the top award that a senior high school basketball player in Minnesota can receive."

The award is similar to college basketball's "Wooden Award," which looks at player qualities on and off the court.
