Lynx trade for Sylvia Fowles; she's the 5th Olympian on the roster

The Minnesota Lynx have acquired center Sylvia Fowles from the Chicago Sky in a three-team deal that includes the Atlanta Dream.

Fowles, a three-time All-Star and two-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, is averaging 13.4 points and 10.2 rebounds this season; essentially mirroring her career averages of 15.7 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.

Fowles played for Team USA and won gold medals in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. Minnesota now has five Olympians on the team, including Lindsay Whalen, Maya Moore, Seimone Augustus and Asjha Jones.

“We’re excited to welcome Sylvia to the Minnesota Lynx organization,” said Lynx Executive Vice President Roger Griffith. “She’s a proven, defensive All-Star player and we expect her to step in and be a great leader on and off the court. She’s been one of the elite centers in the WNBA and will be a key addition to our championship caliber roster.”

It's the second trade Minnesota has made in the last week; Monica Wright was traded to Seattle for point guard Renee Montgomery, the Star Tribune notes.

Minnesota has battled injuries this season and Augustus isn't expected to return from a knee injury until sometime in August. Whalen was held out of the All-Star Game on Saturday because of an eye injury.

As part of the trade, the Lynx sent Damiris Dantas, Reshanda Gray and its 2016 first-round pick to the Dream. Minnesota also received Chicago's 2016 second-round pick.
