Lynx lock up McCarville with multi-year deal

Janel McCarville has signed a contract extension with the WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx, the team announced today.

Lynx started all 32 games she played last season, averaging 6.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. The addition of a strong post player like McCarville helped spark the Lynx to a second WNBA title in three years.

"I'm excited to be back with the Lynx," McCarville said in a press release. "Last year was obviously a great season for us, both on and off the court. I had so much fun playing alongside all of the amazing talent on our roster, and I can't wait to do it all over again this summer as we defend our title."

The former Golden Gopher teamed up with Lynx guard Lindsey Whalen to help lead the University of Minnesota women's basketball team to the 2004 NCAA Final Four. In 2005, McCarville was the No. 1 pick in the WNBA Draft.

WNBA policy doesn't allow terms of contracts to go public, according to FOX Sports North. The WNBA's collective bargaining agreement also doesn't allow teams to extend players for more than three years, so the common opinion is that McCarville, in all likelihood, signed a three-year deal, as noted by the Pioneer Press.

Last season the Lynx re-signed Whalen and fellow All-Star and Olympian Seimone Augustus to three-year deals.

The Lynx open the 2014 season May 16.
