Major section shakeups for Edina, Eden Prairie, 'Tonka hockey

A major shakeup to the big school state hockey tournament is coming.

The Minnesota State High School League announced Friday, via the Star Tribune, that some of the state’s strongest programs are switching sections. Edina and Holy Angels are leaving Section 2 and moving to Section 6, which has historically been one of the toughest sections.

Edina had won the Section 2 title nine years in a row.

Burnsville and Bloomington Jefferson will move from Section 2 to Section 3, while Eden Prairie, Minnetonka and Holy Family Catholic will jump from 6 to 2. Chaska, Le Sueur-Henderson, Marshall and Mound-Westonka are also joining Section 2. Section 3 will also receive Cretin-Derham Hall, St. Louis Park and Minnehaha Academy.

It remains possible that the likes of Le Sueur-Henderson, Marshall, Mound-Westonka, St. Louis Park and Minnehaha Academy will move to a Class 1A section.

Here’s an easier look at what Sections 2 and 6 will look like:

  • Section 2: Chanhassen, Prior Lake, Shakopee, Eden Prairie, Holy Family Catholic, Minnetonka, Chaska, Le Sueur-Henderson, Marshall and Mound-Westonka.
  • Section 6: Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Hopkins, Wayzata, Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper, Holy Angels, Edina, Cretin-Derham Hall, St. Louis Park and Minnehaha Academy.

Sections in every sport are realigned every two years (with very minor changes), but every six years the high school league starts over. Take a look at the interactive, sport-by-sport section alignment map for 2015-16 and 2016-17 to see where your school will fall.
